NOTE: According to Athonite tradition, the only time a monk is permitted to hit someone is if they insult their Geronda. Under no other circumstance are they allowed to hit another human being; as Christ commands, “But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5:39). Every year in Jerusalem, the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox get into scuffles and fist fights, usually around Pascha and Christmas. Many of these brawls have been filmed:

Dec. 27: Palestinian police wielding batons were forced to enter the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and break up a scuffle, forming a human cordon between Greek Orthodox and Armenian Priests who went at each other with brooms and stones inside the church during cleaning. Nov 9 – Armenian and Greek Orthodox worshippers and clergy have a fist fight in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Israeli police say worshippers began fighting each other first as the Armenians were preparing for an annual procession but then clergy on both sides started throwing punches as well.
